Running in the background

ConvertZ was usually left running so the clipboard could be converted at any moment. RustZ works the same way: close the window and it keeps running, with the clipboard commands in an icon in the menu bar or system tray.

What closing the window does

設定 → 外觀 → 關閉視窗後繼續在背景執行 (Settings → Appearance → Keep running after the window is closed) is on by default:

PlatformClosing the windowIconBringing the window back
macOSMinimizes to the DockMenu bar, top rightClick the Dock icon, or choose 顯示 RustZ (Show RustZ) in the menu bar icon
WindowsHides to the system trayNotification area, right end of the taskbarLeft-click the icon; right-click for the menu
LinuxHides to the system trayDepends on the desktopLeft-click the icon; right-click for the menu

The first time the window goes to the background, RustZ shows how to bring it back.

Clipboard conversion uses the defaults in Settings (engine, glyph standard, Taiwan vocabulary and the custom dictionary). The result appears in the icon's tooltip, for example 已將剪貼簿簡→繁(128 字) — clipboard converted, 128 characters.

On macOS the menu bar icon is a monochrome template image, so it matches both light and dark menu bars.

The tray on Linux

RustZ shows its icon through StatusNotifierItem over D-Bus:

  • KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon, LXQt and similar desktops support it out of the box.
  • GNOME needs the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension.
  • Before hiding the window, RustZ checks that the desktop really has a tray. If it does not, the window is minimized to the taskbar instead, so it never disappears with no way back.

Turning it off

Untick 關閉視窗後繼續在背景執行 and closing the window quits RustZ. The tray icon is still there while the program runs, so you can still convert the clipboard from it.
